Time to harvest at the Wheeler Garden!
by kfoss on Aug.06, 2009, under Uncategorized
Late July brought our first harvest – 8 lbs. of very fresh organic produce that we delivered to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. This was followed by a second delivery the next week of 11 lbs. We’ve harvested beans, squash, potatoes and the first tomatoes so far. Now that we’ve had some sunny, summery weather, the tomatoes are beginning to ripen and the peppers are (finally) starting to take off. Some faculty members came out to help weed, tidy up and harvest this week and, thanks to their efforts, the garden is looking great! We plan to make weekly deliveries to the Food Bank for the rest of the garden season. We put in some late season crops of peas and transplanted a few eggplants in hopes of extending our garden season and there are plans to build some cold frames when school starts, extending the season even longer.
