Summer has arrived but summer weather has not!

by kfoss on Jun.30, 2009, under Uncategorized

We finished off the school year with another successful work day on June 11th.  A hard-working crew of 8 teachers, students, parents and one alum (!) showed up to finish off some big tasks before graduation.  We almost finished moving the rest of our soil and compost, weeded all the beds, turned a few of the compost piles and set up the 6th grade science experiment: an attempt to grow “maintenance free” tomatoes in a 4 foot tall box that will conserve moisture and allow the tomatoes to trellis down the sides.  We also set up the brightly decorated chairs made and painted by 6th grade students – a beautiful and cheery addition to the garden!  It was a morning of tremendous progress and the garden looked great for commencement the next day.   The month of June has brought us very little sun and lots of rain.  The plants are doing well (except, perhaps, the peppers who would like some warmer, sunnier weather).  Our second crop of beans appear to have survived the bean seed fly problem that almost entirely devastated our first crop. The beans in the 3 sisters garden are trellising their way up the corn, which has already begun to tassel.  The sunflowers are getting quite tall.  A middle school parent donated many seedlings from her own garden, so we added more squash, potatoes and some herbs.  The potted flowers that were used to decorate the stage at graduation were also donated and have given some nice color to the vegetable and perennial beds.  Miraculously, the deer, groundhogs and rabbits have not yet found our garden.  We’ll keep our fingers crossed as we try to secure funding for a perimeter fence. We’ll also keep them crossed for some sun!  Be sure to check back in a few weeks to see how our summer maintenance plans are going…
